Default Is Google Looking to Buy Sprint? - 11-12-2007

Hot off the rumor mills! Google is looking to purchase Sprint. This would be a huge acquisition for the big Google and cement them into the cell phone service industry. Since Spint has been losing customers at a furious pace...this would be just what would be needed to reinvigorate Spint.

Google is already dipping its toes in the mobile market, though it would be a bit of a leap for the company to enter the carrier space. Still, Google has expressed intentions to bid in the upcoming 700Mhz auction and it's hard to argue that the openness of Sprint's XOHM network wouldn't jive well with the big G's agenda. Could Google snap up Sprint-Nextel and make an even bigger splash in the industry by launching the first nationwide WiMAX network alongside Android? Given the size of Google's war chest, it's certainly within the realm of possibility--the only question that remains is whether or not Google is interested in playing the role of carrier.

Ya I mean if they can control your phone then they control ads on your phone and therefore more click revenues for Google!

I found the post interesting but I need a little more clarification. Would you or anyone else care to elaborate? Thanks.

Rumors that Google appear to be mostly just that - silly rumors to catch a headline. Not so much that it would be a bad idea - for Sprint it would be the rescue they can only dream about as shifts in subscribers and the mobile landscape do not appear to favor Sprint right now.

Google clearly wants to enter and effectively destabilize and reinvent the mobile market and they’ve already taken a major first step in the direction with the Mobile Handset Alliance.
