Add me to list of people naming XML sitemaps. Like Resonate, I'm also using XML sitemaps for ages and have faced no problem whatsoever. I've never used an HTML sitemap.

I prefer to XML sitemap..
XML sitemaps help Google Index the new location of your site pages to ensure an easy and faster recovery from the change. By following the above mentioned steps, you will stand the best chance for retaining your existing rankings.

XML sitemaps are the ones that you need to use. Do not use text sitemaps as its of no use.

XML site maps are very important as they aid search engines in finding all of the content on your site. An XML site map can make hits for your site better and more accurate when someone searches Yahoo, Bing and Google.

I think you must use the XML sitemap.
Easy Steps for creating a XML sitemap
1. Go to xml-sitemaps
2. Enter your full website URL. Choose your other options:
- Enter the frequency your website Is usually updated from the drop-down list.
- Choose an option under ‘Last modification’. This Is the time the URL was last modified.
- Leave the priority at automatic.
3. Click ‘Start’. Wait while your sitemap Is being generated.
4. Click the link to download the .xml file.
