Talking Internet Safety - My Favorite 7 Tips - 06-09-2008

1.) When on the internet personal information should be kept private. Just because someone asks doesn't mean you need to tell them. When someone asks for personal information, consider how they might use that information and whether it is necessary for them to have it.

2.) If you are conversing with someone online, don't assume that they are being honest with you. Just because they say they're 16 doesn't mean they are.

3.) Do not release your password to anyone, even if they say they are from your online provider.

4.) Overall it is best not to respond to unsolicited e-mail (SPAM), if there is something flagrant or inappropriate in the e-mail, consider reporting the sender to their Internet Service Provider (ISP).

5.) Do not give out or post identifying information, including address or telephone numbers.

6.) You may want to create a nickname for a screen name in chat rooms.

7.) Keep in mind when posting in chat rooms or newsgroups, that there may be lurkers (people who read but do not post). Your information can be read and seen by all.

What needs to happen is that internet safety becomes a class in elementary school to help kids get prepared of the dangers out there and how to protect themselves from them.

I perosnally do believe that companies such as facebook and myspace and also AOL/Yahoo need to do A LOT MORE to help provide better security.
The law needs to become stricter and it's time to hold those accountable providing a platform for predators to find their prey.

Here are some more of my thoughts for those who care.

They are some great tips, however I don't feel the Internet should change, after all you are always going to have scammers, frauds and so on. People just need to be better educated or do a simple course before their computer lets you use it for the first time. I know the governments already watch and wonder some of the things I look up and o on the Internet, but at the moment there are ways around that. As soon as the Internet becomes privately owned, all civil liberties will be taken and there will be no point in even coming on here.
Keep the net as it is and better educate people. That is the answer.

well the internet is the BEST and the WORST thing for young kids. There is so much Porn but also there is so much to learn the internet can be good and bad. With simple child blocks parents can keep thier kids off those pesky spam/porn websites
